Recognizing the Symptoms of Amyloidosis

Amyloidosis can cause swelling, fatigue, nerve pain, and digestive issues. Understanding these symptoms can help with early detection and management.

Amyloidosis can present a wide range of symptoms, often affecting multiple organs and systems in the body. Individuals may experience persistent swelling in the legs and ankles, extreme fatigue, and difficulty breathing even with minimal activity. Some may find it uncomfortable to lie flat due to breathlessness. Tingling, numbness, or pain in the hands and feet—especially around the wrists—can also be indicative of nerve involvement. Digestive issues such as diarrhea, sometimes with blood, or constipation may occur. In some cases, the tongue may enlarge and develop a rippled appearance along the edges. Skin changes, including thickened areas, easy bruising, and purplish patches around the eyes, are also common signs to watch for.
